As a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Semanchik is excited to start her career where her journey began nine years ago: Oldwick Animal Hospital. Dr. Semanchik was raised just down the street from the animal hospital, and its establishment was a turning point in her childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian. Still in high school but eager to gain experience, Dr. Semanchik began working at the hospital as kennel help in May of 2009. She soon advanced to the role of veterinary technician, enjoying the added responsibility and interaction with clients. Early on, Dr. Cailles knew she had another “Anna” in her midst.
When it came time to apply to college, Dr. Semanchik could not help but entertain Dr. Cailles’ alma mater. After one visit to Madison, WI, Dr. Semanchik knew it was where she wanted to enroll. She spent the next four years pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology (as had Dr. Cailles) and working at the veterinary school in the Department of Surgical Sciences. Her summers were spent at home, where she continued to gain more advanced experience at the hospital she loved.
Dr. Semanchik considered a few options for veterinary school, but she was ultimately drawn back to Dairyland. While in veterinary school, Dr. Semanchik maintained a position as a student nurse in the hospital’s Small Animal Critical Care Unit. She also participated in community outreach programs that offered free veterinary care to homeless individuals with pets and after-school programs for urban youth.
What Dr. Semanchik enjoys most about veterinary medicine is nurturing the human-animal bond and communicating with clients to determine the best options for their family. Dr. Semanchik is excited to help her home community navigate the joys and sorrows of pet ownership.
Dr. Semanchik resides in Tewksbury, where she lives with her 16-year-old cat and 13-year-old Shih Tzu Dachshund mix. In her free time, she enjoys exploring different ways to stay in shape, with CrossFit being her most recent fascination.
Dr. Semanchik’s professional interests include geriatrics, cardiology, and the management of chronic disease. She intends to pursue further training in the healing methods of acupuncture and herbal medicine to provide even more options for the patients of Oldwick Animal Hospital.
